Guide · October 2026AI SEO explained for business owners: what it can and can't do
Someone has offered you "AI SEO".
Maybe in an email. Maybe in an ad.
It sounds clever. And a bit vague.
We sell AI SEO, so we're not neutral.
That's why each claim below links to the source. Check us.
The short version
- AI SEO means two things: using AI to do the SEO work, and getting found in AI answers like ChatGPT.
- Google says its AI answers have no extra requirements. The normal rules still apply.
- AI is great at the weekly checks and chores most owners never get round to.
- It can't promise you top spot. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
- It can't fake reviews, experience or being good at what you do.
- Start with two free checks this week. They take a minute each.
AI SEO means two things, and you need both
SEO means getting found when people search.
AI SEO adds two twists.
1. AI does the work. It checks your site, researches and drafts.
2. You get found in AI answers. Think ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews.
Good AI SEO does both.
Google says the second part isn't a new trick.
Its guide to AI search calls it "still SEO".
So what does Google actually ask for?
Google's AI answers run on the same rules as normal Google
Google's page on AI features is clear.
"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode."
Your page must be in Google. And allowed to show a short preview.
ChatGPT search uses a bot called OAI-SearchBot.
Block it, and OpenAI says your site
"will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers".
So the first job is boring. Make sure nothing blocks the door.
That's exactly the kind of job AI is good at.
What AI can do: the checks and chores, every week
Most small business sites have small, fixable problems.
Nobody checks. So they sit there for years.
We know because we looked.
Our UK Small Business AI Readiness Study checked 3,671 homepages.
- 54.9% didn't give Google or AI their business details in code.
- Only 4.6% clearly answered the questions customers ask.
- Just 0.4% blocked the bots AI assistants use. Rare, but a disaster if it's you.
None of that needs genius.
It needs someone to check every week, and fix things.
That's where AI shines. It can:
- check your site again and again, without getting bored,
- do the research: what customers search for, and what rivals do,
- write first drafts of pages and answers,
- write the hidden code that tells Google and AI who you are,
- report back in plain words.
Here's our free checker, run on our own website.

Even we have a fix waiting.
Our site doesn't link to social profiles yet.
That's the point. A checker spots what you'd miss.
Next, our free schema checker on the same site.
It reads the hidden code that tells Google who you are.

But AI has limits. Big ones.
What it can't do: promise you top spot
Google's guide to hiring an SEO says it plainly.
"No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
AI answers are the same. Even a perfect page isn't promised a place.
In Google's words: "Indexing and serving isn't guaranteed."
No agency controls what ChatGPT says, either. Including us.
It also takes time.
Google's starter guide says some changes "could take several months".
We're living proof.
Our website went live on 18 October 2026.
Our own checker gives it 99 out of 100.
Yet from 18 to 25 October, Google showed it in searches just 60 times.
Clicks: 0. That's from Google's own Search Console.
Good foundations don't mean instant customers.
Anyone who says otherwise is guessing.
And there's a second limit.
It can't fake being good at what you do
AI can write a page in seconds.
That doesn't make the page worth reading.
Google's view on AI content is blunt:
"Using AI doesn't give content any special gains. It's just content."
What wins is the stuff only you have.
Real jobs. Real photos. Real reviews. Real know-how.
Pumping out hundreds of AI pages can backfire.
Google's spam rules ban it when it adds no value.
Chasing fake "mentions" doesn't help much either.
Google says it "isn't as helpful as it might seem".
So AI is a helper, not a replacement.
That's how we use it too.

Which brings us to the sales pitches.
5 red flags when someone sells you AI SEO
Most come straight from Google's own advice.
1. "We guarantee you'll be number one."
Or "guaranteed in ChatGPT". Nobody can promise that.
2. "We have a special relationship with Google."
Google warns about this one by name.
3. "We'll make a page for every town and every search."
Lots of thin pages can break Google's spam rules.
4. "We'll get you hundreds of mentions, fast."
Real mentions are earned. Not bought in bulk.
5. "It's our secret method."
Google says be careful if a company won't explain.
Our tip: ask them this.
"Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site?"
Google suggests asking exactly that.
Be wary of tools that claim to see inside Google, too.
Google says no outside tool has access to its ranking systems.
That includes ours. Our checkers test public advice only.
So what can you do yourself?
What to do this week, for free
Google says a small local business "can probably do much of the work yourself".
We agree. Start here.
1. Run our AI readiness checker. Fix the first item.
2. Try our schema checker. No code? See our schema guide.
3. Check you're not blocking AI. Our 2-minute guide shows how.

5. Answer 5 real questions customers ask. Our FAQ guide shows how.
Skip the shiny extras.
You don't need an llms.txt file for Google. Our llms.txt guide explains why.
For your web person: the technical notes
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. No special schema or "AI text files" needed (Google).
- Google's AI features page also lists an up-to-date Business Profile and Merchant Center data among the basics.
- Controls:
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetandnoindexlimit what Google shows. Google-Extended covers some of Google's other AI systems, not Search. - ChatGPT search: allow
OAI-SearchBotin robots.txt.GPTBotis a separate bot for AI training and can be blocked on its own. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply (OpenAI). - Check hosting and CDN bot settings as well as robots.txt. Google lists both.
- Scaled content abuse: Google's spam policies name "Using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users".
- Google: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." Our checkers test a site against public guidance only.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console to track impressions, clicks and indexing.
